September 14, 2009: General Assembly authorizes formation of a UN women’s “super agency” after a 3-year effort by over 300 international NGOs (non-governmental organizations that help women). -- It came close to being postponed the weekend before. (See Thalif Dean article September 5, 2009).

The GEAR campaign (Gender Equality Architecture Reform) by the CSW NGOs succeeded!

September 30, 2009; UN Security Council Resolution 1888, addition to #1325 Women, Peace & Security Resolution;
(A draft copy of the resolution, SCR 1888, can be found at: www.iwtc.org/1888.html)

United Nations, New York: In a meeting chaired by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on September 30, the United Nations Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution that specifically mandates peacekeeping missions to protect women and children from sexual violence during armed conflict. The Security Council also requested the UN Secretary-General to appoint a Special Representative to provide coherent and strategic leadership to address the issue.

What the UN Needs To Do

The United Nations needs to be the sponsor of the 5th women’s world conference, so that women from all 192 UN countries know that it is about and for them. Many will be able to come only because it is a UN conference that is recognized by their governments. It needs to be designated as the 5th, to acknowledge that it follows the other four, specifically Beijing and that it is intended to bring to fruition the goals and aspirations that were put into the Beijing Platform for Action (with no further debate on them). It would be as significant to women working for women as the Olympics are to athletes. Events leading up to it, the conference itself, and the ripples radiating out from it, including meeting in circles, would raise consciousness and oxytocin levels, moving us toward reaching a critical mass and a new era.

5WWC is the predecessor to this website. It is being maintained as a sister site documenting the history of this grassroots initiative in support of a 5th Women's World Conference prior to 2009. It also contains the current listing of the organizations who have registered with us in support of a 5WCW. To register your organization, click here.
