Dear Friends and Worldwide Signers of 5WCW petition:

We need only one member-state ambassador to sponsor the resolution for 5WCW in the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly (2011-2012) which begins in September. The best situation in this short time, would be for this resolution to be sponsored by three developing countries: in Asia, Africa, and Latin America and one Scandinavian country. Toward this end, we have a Concept Paper that is in the language and form that ambassadors and delegations are familiar with. Once the concept is accepted, a 5WCW resolution would simply need to say something such as:

1 Supports convening a 5th World Conference on Women in 2015

2. Urges the Secretary-General to begin an open-ended preliminary process, similar to that which preceded the Beijing 4WCW and to consider any place for the conference site.

3. Calls upon all member states to encourage participation of civil society and government entities concerned with women and girls.

CONSIDER THIS AN ALL-POINTS BULLETIN:

Will you take action? Here is the webpage for a list of UN member states: http://www.un.org/en/members/ (click on name of country brings up website, name of ambassador, addresses, photos and more)

This is an invitation to do what you feel moved to do to urge your ambassador to sponsor or co-sponsor the 5WCW resolution.

You do not need to get anyone’s permission to be an activist on behalf of 5WCW. If you take this on as a personal assignment, proceed swiftly to communicate through channels. A letter can be mailed. A staff person can be called for an email address and it is possible to set up an appointment in person if you are in New York or with whomever it might be in your own country whose influence would help.

Convening A 5th World Conference On Women (5WCW):
Vision Statement Urging the General Assembly Resolution

“The Fastest Way to Change Society is to Mobilize the Women of The World.”
Charles Malik, former President of the United Nations General Assembly

If ever the world sees a time when women shall come together
purely and simply for the benefit of mankind,
it will be a power such as the world has never known.”

Matthew Arnold, 19th Century philosopher

Recalling that the Charter of the United Nations reaffirms the equal rights of men and women.

Recalling the Beijing Declaration and the Platform for Action of the Fourth World Conference on Women

Recognizing that the participation of both men and women is essential for the attainment of sustainable peace and security and that the necessity and contribution of women is specifically acknowledged in Security Council Resolutions 1325, 1820.

Noting that while two of the Millennium Development Goals specifically address women’s concerns and that empowerment of women is necessary to attain all eight of them.

Noting the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women which is often described as a bill of rights for women remains a model for empowerment and equality for women.

Noting that the General Assembly Resolution on the Girl Child and the Convention on the Rights of the Child if implemented are related to the empowerment and equality for women.

Noting recommendations for gender equality and equal participation of women in decisions to do with the environment.

Realizing that the need is to implement these existing UN resolutions and documents rather than create new documents.

Realizing that a UN sponsored conference on women could bring together a global conference of women to share information, best practices, and foster the next generation of women leaders,

Realizing that this would be the first UN World Conference on Women in the 21st Century with the technology to link simultaneous conferences anywhere in the world.

Appreciating that a host-city proposal from San Francisco includes financial responsibilities for this conference and as might bids to be host city from other countries.

We urge a General Assembly 5WCW Resolution that:

1 Supports convening a 5th World Conference on Women in 2015

2. Urges the Secretary-General to begin an open-ended preliminary process, similar to that which preceded the Beijing 4WCW and to consider any place for the conference site.

3. Calls upon all member states to encourage participation of civil society and government entities concerned with women and girls.

THE TIDE IS TURNING
and much good is happening now
that has taken perseverance, work and faith.

A Major Step:
Michelle Bachelet’s Appointment to Head UN Women
Michelle Bachelet

Congratulations to the GEAR campaign and to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon!

Now, if UN Women with Michelle Bachelet at the helm, sponsors the UN 5th World Conference on Women, it would bring the superagency and women’s problems and solutions into global awareness, inspire fund-raising for it, and have 21st century communication technology. Women in all 192 member-states would learn this conference is about issues and possibilities that concern them, with one or many more of their own attending and linked to them. She is the former president of Chile, a pediatrician, single mother, liberal, imprisoned by Pinochet, who left office with an 84% approval. UN Women has a prominent woman to launch it who can rally and inspire, is trusted and competent to lead, and is respected and well-known among world leaders.

Amplify the Girlz Effect
5WCW 2015!

There is a whole generation of women who were not old enough to attend Beijing. We advocate a 5th UN World Conference on Women and Girls, instead of a Beijing 20 review. The new women's super agency would become known and make an impact through this conference. The agency and the conference together would advance the women's agenda, and further the goal of reaching a tipping point to end patriarchy by bringing gender balance to the world.

We want to inform and energize girls to work toward a UN NGO 5WCW because they will be the ones to attend and through this, they will meet other girls and women who will be the generation with the energy and technical connections to further efforts to bring gender equity to international decisions and priorities.

A Step toward 5WCW in 2015

UN General Assembly Establishes “UN Women”

On July 2, 2010 in a historic moment, the UN General Assembly voted unanimously for the establishment of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and Empowerment, to be known as “UN Women.” This is the result of years of negotiations between UN Member States and active advocacy of women’s groups and civil society. With the establishment of UN Women, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the world has entered “a new era in the UN’s work for women.” UN Women will be headed by an Under-Secretary-General. It will be operational by January 2011. (Click here for more information.)

SYNERGY!

5WCW-Synergy Logo“UN Women and a 5th UN World Conference on Women is a natural fit, a synergy between the two that would raise consciousness and funds for the benefit of women and the development of women’s leadership at every level of society. Since it takes 3 years to organize, a target date of 2015 would be the 20th anniversary of the Beijing conference, the first since the internet and globalization, a time to network a new generation of women leaders. Reaching a tipping point would make it possible to carry out the Beijing Platform for Action, the Millennium Development Goals, and the Security Council resolutions on Women, Peace, and Security. A world that is safe and sustainable would become possible.” Jean Shinoda Bolen, speaking for 5WCW.

What the UN Needs To Do

The United Nations needs to be the sponsor of the 5th World Conference on Women, so that women from all 192 UN countries know that it is about and for them. Many will be able to come only because it is a UN conference that is recognized by their governments. It needs to be designated as the 5th, to acknowledge that it follows the other four, specifically Beijing and that it is intended to bring to fruition the goals and aspirations that were put into the Beijing Platform for Action (with no further debate on them). It would be as significant to women working for women as the Olympics are to athletes. Events leading up to it, the conference itself, and the ripples radiating out from it, including meeting in circles, would raise consciousness and oxytocin levels, moving us toward reaching a critical mass and a new era.
